Property Information

Mount Ophir Estate

168 Stillards Lane
Rutherglen VIC 3685 Australia

Mount Ophir Estate, a unique and exclusive property in the rural district of Rutherglen in northern Victoria, Australia. Mount Ophir Estate was established in 1891 by Eisemann and Gleeson as a farm and vineyard. The Burgoyne family the owners of Mount Ophir Estate from 1903 were prominent London wine merchants, who developed the property further by constructing a French provincial tower (a nod to their heritage) and a winemaking facility. At this time, the building was the largest state-of-the-art wine producing complex in the Southern Hemisphere. Their ultimate vision was to be the wine centre of Australia.

The wine bore the royal seal of England and was transported via rail to port and then via steamships to ‘the mother country’ to satisfy the palate of British aristocracy. The winery closed in 1955, and the 740-acre estate reduced to 140 acres. Eliza, Angela, Nick Brown and families, purchased the property in May 2016 and have taken Mount Ophir Estate on with a passion not seen since its heady days under the Burgoyne family.

Known for their successes with All Saints Estate, Terrace Restaurant, Indigo Food Co, St Leonards Vineyard and Rutherglen’s Thousand Pound Wine Bar, the Browns painstakingly set to work, spending countless hours undertaking a loving restoration of the now 140-acre property.

Currently operating as an exclusive site for private events, including weddings, corporate getaways, and unique, luxury accommodation, Mount Ophir’s future as a distinguished Rutherglen landmark has been assured.

Mount Ophir Estate’s philosophy is to be gentle on the environment and look after the earth. Sustainable farm management is used on established plantings of low yielding and high-quality vineyard on fine clay loam of Shiraz, Durif (a famous regional variety) and Brown Muscat. The first vintage released will be released in 2021.
